%X Ocean-color products from remote sensing have become fundamental measurements to understand and model climate, biogeochemical and physical changes on oceans surface in a long-term perspective. However the accuracy of the remote sensing measurements depend on reliably, truthful and accurate in situ measures to calibrate and validate ocean color algorithms. Regarding coastal waters, this accuracy can be compromised, since there are external sources of variability of the main optical active constituents of the water. The Antares network was created with the objective of monitor and detect long-term changes on coastal waters around Latin America, with the main approach of developing time series of in situ oceanographic measurements to integrate with remote sensing ones. Thus, bio-optical algorithms for ocean-colour estimates can be improved regionally. This paper describes the comparison exercise for the chlorophyll-a concentration collected monthly from 2006 to 2012 at the Antares Station in Ubatuba, Brazil and its comparison with MODIS-Aqua daily products. When in situ and satellite data were taken exactly on the same day, the dispersion was low (R2 0,02) because of the limited number of samples available. Otherwise when satellite data was taken on an interval of more or less one day from the in situ sampling, there was higher dispersion (R2 0,40) because of the larger number of samples and on both cases no average significant differences were observed. Thus we can conclude that MODIS-Aqua default algorithm for chlorophyll-a estimation is performing quite accurate at the Antares-Ubatuba Station, north shore of São Paulo, Brazil. However, a more robust database is requested for better quantifying this accuracy.
